IHSPA seeks to identify and acknowledge emerging talent in newspaper, yearbook, and digital media students in member high schools. The opportunity is open to students in 9th, 10th, or 11th grade. These students will be the backbone of their respective schools’ publications for the upcoming year.
Each adviser may nominate up to nine students total from any combination of publications (newspaper, online, and yearbook).
Requirements:
- Submit 3 examples of work — Newspaper, Yearbook, and Digital Media all apply.
- Work must be submitted online using PDFs or links.
- All work must have been published or posted March 10, 2023 and March 10, 2024 by current students at IHSPA member schools.
All nominees will be acknowledged by a certificate.
Ten Emerging Journalists will be selected in two classes, which will be adjusted to accommodate the schools entering the contest and the size of their student populations. Winning entries will be determined by the overall quality of the work submitted, its impact on the school and community, the students’ understanding of the fundamentals of journalism, and the level of experimentation.
Ten Emerging Journalists will be offered a $100 scholarship toward the cost of attending the University of Iowa Summer Journalism Workshops for High School students or the Drake Media Now summer journalism camp.
Deadline is April 1, 2023
