The 2024 Iowa Summer Journalism Workshop at the University of Iowa wrapped up on Thursday, July 18th after a successful week for campers!
The Iowa Summer Journalism Workshop (ISJW) is a five-day residential summer camp, where high school students learn from award-winning journalists, professionals, and journalism professors. This year, there were seven sessions including, Broadcasting, Graphic Design, Investigative Reporting, Publication Leadership, Photojournalism, Personal Writing: Writing for Change, and Personal Writing: Writing Opinion and Self Expression.
During the workshop, campers were able to experience what it’s like to live on campus and get hands-on journalism experience around the Iowa City area. Many sessions took field trips to different places including the Linn County Court House, the Refugee Welcoming Center, Farmer’s Market, KCRG, and more! Outside the classroom students had plenty of activities to participate in from going to the pool, having a scavenger hunt, game night, and karaoke. Their schedules were packed with great experiences for their week!
There were 68 students that participated in the workshop with students coming from all across the country including Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas, Maryland, Oregon, and California!
Thank you to the Iowa Newspaper Association, The Cedar Rapids Gazette, Van Meter, Hills Bank, and the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation for sponsoring the workshop, which allowed 28 students to receive full funding to attend ISJW!
