A photo slide show and an in-depth story about an acute problem and how some high school athletes decided to take action are the February Stories of the Month.
Haneen Eltyeb of Iowa City West actually attended a robotics tournament and covered over a dozen students in photos and captions. On a SATURDAY! Each photo was accompanied by a brief. When read together, they created a written story. Let’s celebrate alternative story forms! Check our Haneen’s story here.
It is hard to find people to officiate youth and high school sports. Elise Dykstra of Mason City highlighted how coaches encouraged basketball players to become certified refs. She used three nonperson sources for stats and interviewed five people including three of the officials. She even took the photos. Check our Elise’s story here.
The Iowa High School Press Association created a new contest, Story & Photo of the Month, for a chance for students to be featured on our social media. Students can submit a link to their best timely photos and stories to be entered into the monthly contest. At the end of the month, IHSPA chooses a story and a photo to post on our Instagram, Facebook, and website.
